Register to vote

Register to vote

By law, everyone aged 18-years-old and over must register to vote. You must register yourself. You cannot allow a 'head of household' to register everyone who lives at an address.

If you change your name or move house, you must register to vote again.

Register to vote

You need to provide your National Insurance number and date of birth when you register. This makes the electoral register more secure.

If you're not sure whether you're registered to vote or not, you can email us your name and address using the details below. We'll let you know if you need to register again.

Who should register

  • All 16 and 17 year olds. They will be eligible to vote when they reach the age of 18.
  • British citizens
  • Commonwealth citizens
  • Citizens of the Irish Republic
  • Other European Union Citizens may vote at Local Elections, and in European Parliamentary Election
  • Those who normally live at your address but are temporarily away, for example on holiday, as students, in hospital or merchant seamen.
  • Students who are in full time education and who live away may register at both their college/university address and at an address in the Borough Council's area
  • Anyone who is working away, unless his/her absence will be for more than six months from 15th October.
